Read "The Gospel of Saint Matthew". In the selection, Matthew presents what is commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount. Here Jesus instructs his followers about what the Kingdom of God requires of all its members. Answer the questions in complete sentences on a separate sheet of paper. Due Friday, 12/7. Questions: 1) What are the Gospels? Modern scholars believe they were written several decades after Jesus died. What impact might this have on our understanding of his life and teachings? 2) Name two types of people that Jesus says are 'blessed'. For each one, explain why you think he emphasizes this. 3) When Jesus says, "I have come not to abolish [eliminate] them, but to fulfill them", what law and prophets is he referring to? Why do you think he says this? 4) Describe two of Jesus's teachings, and explain how he believes they are improvements upon previous teachings. 5) Describe the advice Jesus gives his followers in the passage that begins, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on Earth". 6) In the last sentence, why do you think Matthew states that Jesus taught with authority and was not like the scribes? 7) What groups/types of people who were alive at the time would be most attracted to Jesus's message?
