10th Grade Students:
If you were absent on Thursday 2/14, you did not yet complete your Fall Term reflection and add 3 pieces of work to your student folder. This needs to be completed at lunch or after school no later than Friday, March 9. Also, if you need to make up Unit Test #5, tomorrow, Wednesday 2/27 is the last day to do so. -Mr. S If you were absent on Friday 2/15 you missed Unit Test #5. It can be made up in Room 330 at lunch or after school. The last day to make up this exam is Wednesday, 2/27.
Read textbook pp. 507-511, 516-521, & 536-541. Answer all questions in complete sentences. Due Tuesday 2/26. 1) Vocabulary Builder: Find one word in the reading that you don't know or are unsure of the meaning. Look up each word in the dictionary. For each, write out the word, the definition, and an original sentence (a sentence that you created yourself) that uses the word. Choose regular words, not social studies key terms that are boldfaced in the text. Do NOT leave this blank because you think you know every word -- you WILL lose credit! (pp. 507-511) 2) Describe the ways in which the Ottomans gained, consolidated, and maintained power. 3) Why was conquering Constantinople an important goal for the Ottomans? How did Mehmed II achieve this goal? 4) Suleyman I is sometimes known as Suleyman the Magnificent. Does he deserve this name? Defend your argument using evidence from the text. (pp. 516-521) 5) Who were the Mughals? Explain how they came to power in India. 6) Write a paragraph (at least 6 sentences long) that explains why the reign of Akbar was considered a Golden Age. Include a topic sentence, and then at least one sentence about each of the following: conquests; government; cultural blending; arts and literature; and architecture. (pp. 536-541) 7) Describe the changes the Ming Dynasty made to Chinese government and economy after ending Mongol rule. 8) Who was Zheng He? Why did the Ming emperor send him on voyages? Why were these voyages stopped in 1433? 9) Describe two ways that the Manchu rulers of the Qing Dynasty continued the policies of the Ming. What changes were made? 10) Creative Response: Read p. 541. Imagine you are a woman during the Ming or Qing period. Write a poem, song, or rap that expresses how you feel about your role in Ming or Qing society.

What factors led to a decline in the 11th century? 5) Describe the system of feudalism that emerged. Compare and contrast this system with feudalism in Europe. (see p. 361) (pp. 542-547) 6) How did life in Japan change in the 15th century? What comparison is made to Europe? 7) How did the Tokugawa unify Japan? Explain the "alternate attendance policy". Why do you think it was effective? 8) Create an organizer entitled 'Tokugawa Japan' with sections for: society; culture; and foreign contacts. Take notes. 9) Summary & Opinion: Write a 2-paragraph response (at least 5 sentences per paragraph) in which you explain the Tokugawa's movement toward a closed country policy, and express your opinion about it. In the 1st paragraph, explain why Japan's leaders decided to move from openness to isolation. In the 2nd paragraph, explain whether you think this decision was wise or unwise.
