Read textbook pp. 851-856 & 858-861. Answer all questions. Due Tuesday 2/11. 1) Vocabulary Builder: Find one word in the reading that you don't know or are unsure of the meaning. Look up each word in the dictionary. For each, write out the word, the definition, and an original sentence (a sentence that you created yourself) that uses the word. Choose regular words, not social studies key terms that are boldfaced in the text. Do NOT leave this blank because you think you know every word -- you WILL lose credit! (pp. 851-856) 2) Why did the U.S. join the war in April 1917? Do you feel the U.S. entry was justified (done for a good reason)? Explain. 3) Why did Russia withdraw from the war in March 1917? How did this impact Germany's war strategy? 4) Write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) that summarizes the human costs, economic costs, and social effects of WWI. (pp. 858-861) 5) Why were there arguments among the leaders of the United States, Britain, and France? Explain their differing priorities. 6) Describe the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. What was the League of Nations? How did the treaty punish Germany? 7) What new countries were formed by the Treaty? Which countries lost land? 8) Create a chart entitled 'Reactions to the Treaty' with columns for: Germany; Africa & Asia; and Japan & Italy. Take notes. 9) Express Your Opinion: Was the Treaty of Versailles fair? Consider of all of the nations affected. Write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) that explains your answer.
