Read textbook pages 263-268, 269-272, & 273-279. Answer all questions in complete sentences. Due Tuesday, 12/18. 1) Vocabulary Builder: Find one word in the reading that you don't know or are unsure of the meaning. Look up each word in the dictionary. For each, write out the word, the definition, and an original sentence (a sentence that you created yourself) that uses the word. Choose regular words, not social studies key terms that are boldfaced in the text. Do NOT leave this blank because you think you know every word -- you WILL lose credit! (pp. 263-268) 2) Even before Islam, how did the city of Mecca develop into a center of ideas and a "mixed religious environment"? 3) Why were Muhammad's teachings initially met with hostility? How did he gain followers and rise to great power? 4) What are the Five Pillars of Islam? Describe at least two other Muslim customs, morals, or laws. (pp. 269-272) 5) What is a caliph? How did Islam spread under the first four caliphs? How did they treat conquered peoples? 6) Describe the basic differences between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims. 7) How did the Abbasids consolidate [strengthen] their power? Describe the Muslim trade network that existed at this time. (pp. 273-279) 8) Describe the social class system under the rule of the Abbasids. What was the role of women in Abbasid society? 9) Create a graphic organizer entitled "Muslim Achievements" with 4 sections: Math/Astronomy; Literature; Art/Architecture; and Medicine. Take notes about the key achievements in each area. 10) Creative Response: Once again you have been given an assignment by the editor of WRKA News. This time you must conduct an interview with Muhammad. Write a script for your interview with the great prophet. Write at least 5 questions that you will ask, and for each question, what you imagine his answer might be.
