Read pages 123-133. Complete all questions in complete sentences. Please use a pen, NOT a pencil! You may also type and print. You do not need to write out the questions... just answer them! Due Wed. 11/21. 1) Vocabulary Builder: Find one word in the reading that you don't know or are unsure of the meaning. Look up each word in the dictionary. For each, write out the word, the definition, and an original sentence (a sentence that you created yourself) that uses the word. Choose regular words, not social studies key terms that are boldfaced in the text. Do NOT leave this blank because you think you know every word -- you WILL lose credit! 2) Describe the ways that the sea, the land, and the climate of Greece impacted Greek life. 3) Summarize the ways in which the Minoans, Mycenaeans, and Dorians contributed to the roots of Greek culture. 4) How were the types of governments used in Greece (monarchy; aristocracy; and oligarchy) similar? How were they different? 5) What is democracy? How did Athenian leaders Draco, Solon, and Cleisthenes move the city-state towards democracy? 6) Explain the difference between how Athenian boys and girls were educated using evidence from the text. 7) Make a 3-column chart entitled "Ancient Sparta" with three columns, 'Government', 'Society', and 'Daily Life'. Take notes. 8) How did the Persian Wars begin? How did the Greeks eventually win? How did this victory affect the people of Athens? 9) Creative Response: Write a script (at least 3 lines per character) for a scene in which an Athenian argues with a Spartan about which city-state is a better place to live. Make sure each character uses some evidence from the text to defend their argument.
