Write a 2-paragraph “claim/counterclaim” response to the question “Was Napoleon a friend or foe of the French Revolution?” Defend your argument using details from your class notes and textbook pp. 663-671. I recommend using only these sources. Note: This is not a full essay, so there’s no introduction and conclusion. Just write one paragraph supporting your claim, and a 2nd paragraph acknowledging (but refuting) the counter-claim. [Refute means to prove false.] Consider these questions as you develop your claim: 1) What were the values and goals of the revolution? 2) How did Napoleon reform France? 3) Did he live up to the values and achieve the goals, or not? If you’re typing, please use the template provided. Due Friday, 10/26.
Here are some supplemental materials to help support you in your debates next week. -Mr. S
Read pages 66-71. Complete all questions in complete sentences on a sheet of loose leaf paper. Please use a pen, NOT a pencil! You may also type and print. You do not need to write out the questions... just answer them! Due Tuesday, 10/23. 1) Vocabulary Builder: Find one word in the reading that you don't know or are unsure of the meaning. Look up each word in the dictionary. For each, write out the word, the definition, and an original sentence (a sentence that you created yourself) that uses the word. Choose regular words, not social studies key terms that are boldfaced in the text. Do NOT leave this blank because you think you know every word -- you WILL lose credit! 2) What is moksha? How does one achieve moksha? Show an understanding of the terms atman and brahma in your answer. 3) Explain the terms reincarnation and karma. How are the two terms interrelated? 4) Describe at least two ways that Hinduism has changed over the years. Do you think the lack of a single founder is what caused it to change more than other religions? Yes or no? Explain. 5) Describe at least two ways that Hinduism impacted Indian society. 6) Explain the basic beliefs of Buddhism. Include the terms Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, and nirvana. 7) Describe one way that Buddhism differed from Hinduism, and one way that it was similar. 8) Describe at least two ways that Buddhism spread beyond India. 9) CREATIVE RESPONSE: Siddhartha Gautama needs your help. He is starting a personal website about his life (Buddha.com), but he needs a bio (short biographical profile). Write a two-paragraph bio (5 sentences per paragraph) that explains who Siddhartha Gautama is and summarizes the events in his life that led to him becoming known as the Buddha.

Explain. 4) Identify and describe the ideas of the three different groups that developed in the Legislative Assembly. 5) What problems were facing the government in the summer of 1792? What major change occurred in September? 6) Who were the Jacobins? As they gained influence, what two important decisions were made by February 1793? 7) Who was Maximilien Robespierre? Why was his period of rule known as the Reign of Terror? 8) Read the quote on p. 660. How did Robespierre justify (give a reason or excuse for) his use of terror? 9) Express Your Opinion: Do you agree with Robespierre's defense of his actions? Can violence ever really "flow from virtue"? (The word virtue means "high moral standards") Can it ever be used to make society better? Is a government ever justified in using violence against people that it views as a threat? Explain in a paragraph that is at least 5 sentences long. HONORS SECTIONS: Explain in at least a two-paragraph response (5 sentences each).
Tomorrow, Tue. 10/15 is the absolute last chance to make up Unit Test #1, which was administered in class last Wednesday.
-Mr. S The deadline on HW7 has been extended to Wednesday. Tomorrow in class we will do independent work on the Tale of Two Cities excerpt, and then discuss it. If you already completed your diary entry, that's fine. You may want to add to it or change it after our discussion. If you haven't done it yet, you might want to wait until tomorrow night. -Mr. S
Your class notes are your best resource for studying. You also have your textbook. In addition, here are some files from our work in class that I thought might be helpful. You'll need to be logged into a Google account to access the files. - Mr. S
