Here's a link to a Google Drive folder with class handouts and PowerPoint files from Unit 2. Some of you may find these to be helpful as additional study materials for Friday's test. You'll need a Google account to access the files.

Student username: rkastudent Student password: RKA!Student1 Over the holiday weekend, organize your notes for Notes Check #2 on Tue, 11/28. I will be checking Notes 2.1-2.9 and 3.1-3.3.
Read Industrialists and Reformers: A Decision-Making Model (file attached). Use information from the chart, your notes, and the textbook to write a script for a movie scene where three guests at a dinner party -- one laissez faire capitalist; one Marxist or socialist; and one social reformer (ex. Utopian; Utilitiarian) -- get into an argument about how to solve the problems of the Industrial Revolution. Due Wednesday 11/22. Guidelines: 1) I would greatly prefer that you type and print this assignment. 2) Begin with an introduction that explains what will be happening in the scene. 3) Make sure each character has at least 4 speaking lines. (HONORS = 5 speaking lines) 4) This should be a fun assignment... feel free to be creative! 5) If you are proud of your script, and you think you'd like to have it performed in class, please email it to me at [email protected] (in addition to printing a copy to hand in). This will make it easier for me to print additional copies for your group members in class on Wednesday.
Read textbook pages 734-740. Answer the following questions in complete sentences on loose leaf paper. Due Friday. 1) Vocabulary Builder: Find two words in the reading that you don't know or are unsure of the meaning. Look up each word in the dictionary. For each, write out the word, the definition, and an original sentence (a sentence that you created yourself) that uses the word. Choose regular words, not social studies key terms that are boldfaced in the text. Do NOT leave this blank because you think you know every word -- you WILL lose credit! 2) For each of the following thinkers, write one sentence that explains their ideas. Then write one sentence that explains what they all had in common: Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, and David Ricardo. 3) In what way were Utilitarians, Utopians, and Socialists similar? How were they different from laissez-faire thinkers? 4) Who was Karl Marx? Explain the main ideas of The Communist Manifesto. How did this book influence events in the 1900s? 5) Read the chart on page 737. Explain at least two differences between capitalism and socialism. 6) Consider the following people from Britain during the Industrial Revolution: factory worker, small shop owner, factory owner, unemployed craftsman. Which of them would be most likely to prefer capitalism and which would prefer socialism? Explain. 7) Using pages 738-740, make a list of 8 rights, laws, or reforms that addressed the problems of industrialization. 8) Opinion: Of the rights, laws, or reforms listed above, which do you feel made the most significant impact on the lives of the lower classes? Explain your answer in a paragraph at least 5 sentences long. HONORS: Choose 2 and write 2 paragraphs.
Please read James Watt: Powering the World and The Opening of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway. Print out the answer sheet and answer all questions in the spaces provided. Due Tuesday 11/14.
