HW23 is a Take-Home DBQ Essay on the Industrial Revolution. The documents are provided in the PDF file posted below. (Please note - you are not required to complete the short answer questions and therefore you do not need to print out the documents to hand them in.) There are three parts to the essay task: 1) Describe the significant changes that contributed to the Industrial Revolution; 2) Explain the effects these changes had on European society; and 3) Describe the different ideas people proposed to solve the problems of industrialization. This means that I expect at least a 5-paragraph response (introduction; one paragraph for each bullet point; and a conclusion). Use the Essay-Writing Reminders provided to help craft your essay. Use as many documents as you can in your response. Please make sure you use proper citations for each document used. Put the document number in parenthesis after the first sentence in which you first use information from the document. [Ex. In 1858, a law was passed ending property qualifications for members of Parliament. (Doc #9)] Also, make sure you include some outside information from Notes 3.1-3.4. This assignment counts as a double homework and is due the day after we return, Tuesday, Dec. 3. Happy Thanksgiving!
A reminder for Global 3 students. Over thanksgiving vacation, you need to organize your notes for Notes Check #2 on Tue, 12/3. I will be checking Notes 2.2-2.9 and 3.1-3.4.
Read textbook pages 734-740. Answer the following questions in complete sentences on loose leaf paper. This will count as a DOUBLE assignment. It is not due until Wednesday, 11/27. 1) Vocabulary Builder: Find three words in the reading that you don't know or are unsure of the meaning. Look up each word in the dictionary. For each, write out the word, the definition, and a sentence that uses the word. Choose regular words, not social studies key terms that are boldfaced in the text. 2) For each of the following thinkers, write one sentence that explains their ideas. Then write one sentence that explains what they all had in common: Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, and David Ricardo. 3) In what way were Utilitarians, Utopians, and Socialists similar? How were they different from laissez-faire thinkers? 4) Who was Karl Marx? What were the main ideas of The Communist Manifesto? Did this book have an impact? Explain. 5) Answer Skillbuilder Question #1 on p. 737 using information from the chart, Capitalism vs. Socialism. 6) Answer Skillbuilder Question #2. 7) Using pages 738-740, make a list of 8 rights, laws, or reforms that addressed the problems of industrialization. 8) Creative Response: Read Industrialists and Reforms: A Decision-Making Model (file attached). Write a script for a movie scene where three guests at a dinner party (one capitalist; one Marxist; and one social reformer) get into an argument about how to solve the problems of the Industrial Revolution. Include an introduction that explains what will be happening in the scene. Then, write the script.
AP Students: Good news - I'm giving you until Wed. 11/27 to complete this assignment!
Note: You only need to complete activity #1: Imagine that you are a child who works in a textile mill. Write a diary entry in which you describe your work life. I am expecting a response one full page in length..

What experiences in Watt’s early life helped him to develop his skills? 2. What were Watt’s original improvements to the steam engine? How did he continue to improve it? 3. What is a patent? (look it up in the dictionary if necessary) Why were patents important to Watt? 4. How did Frances, her mother, and the people watching from the road feel about the train ride? 5. What happened to Mr. Huskisson? How did people react? 6. What can this story tell us about the way that people’s lives are impacted by new technologies?
