Read pages 623-628. Complete all questions in complete sentences, typed or handwritten in pen. No pencil please! You do not need to write out the questions... just answer them! Due Monday, 9/19.
1) Vocabulary Builder: Find one word in the reading that you don't know or are unsure of the meaning. Look it up in the dictionary. Write out the word, the definition, and an original sentence that uses the word. Choose a regular word, not a social studies key term that is boldfaced in the text. Do NOT leave this blank because you think you know every word -- you WILL lose credit! 2) Before 1500, how did most scholars decide what was true or false? Why do you think they rarely challenged old ideas? 3) According to the text, what circumstances helped lead up to the Scientific Revolution? Which do you think was most significant? 4) Explain the difference between the geocentric and heliocentric theory. 5) How did Kepler build on the work of Copernicus? How did Galileo build on Kepler's work? 6) Why do you think Church leaders rejected Galileo's new ideas about science? Was it wise or unwise for them to do so? Explain. 7) Name some steps used in the scientific method. Why do you think it is important to use this approach to science? 8) How were Francis Bacon's and Rene Descartes' ideas similar? How were they different? 9) Of the new scientific developments mentioned on pp. 627-628, which one do you think has had the most significant impact on your life today? Explain your choice. 10) Creative Response: In 1676, Isaac Newton said "If I have seen farther than others it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants." He meant that in order to explain the Law of Gravity, he used the work of major thinkers who came before him in order to make intellectual progress. On a separate sheet of paper, draw a cartoon or write a poem, rap, or song that expresses the meaning of this quote. Comments are closed.
